Biosecurity Australia (BA) has released a report on the importation of freshwater ornamental fish. The review covers the biosecurity risks associated with gourami iridovirus and related viruses. In short this will mean that we will have to source many species of fish from approved or ‘safe’ suppliers overseas. This will reduce the amount of fish species being imported into Australia and also put up the cost of importing fish.We will also need to come up with a non destructive test for iridoviruses so that batch testing can be done with minimal cost to the industry and less loss of fish during testing
